Inspire Digital’s DAB+ digital radio service will face an uncertain future if the Federal Government fails to reverse a funding shortfall for community broadcasters in the upcoming May budget.

Community digital radio services were launched nationally in 2011 and there are currently 37 metro-wide digital radio services in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

However, Federal Government funding cuts in the last budget have resulted in a $1.4 million shortfall which, unless reversed in the upcoming May budget, will see many digital stations axed.

Inspire Digital’s Channel Manager, Kim Wilkinson, said community stations like Inspire Digital are entitled to affordable access to digital radio alongside the national and commercial broadcasting sectors.

“Our station has become an integral part of our local Christian community. Providing a 100% Christian Music and Teaching format, we offer the only DAB+ Christian service in our city. To see that disappear from our airwaves will be a huge loss for our many loyal listeners who have grown to highly value this service as part of their daily life,” Mrs Wilkinson said.

“Minister Conroy must commit to funding the shortfall in the next budget or community digital radio services will start disappearing.”

Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) President Adrian Basso said the Government’s funding shortfall for community digital services would be disastrous for media diversity, specialist programming and local and Australian content.

“Community radio provides a voice to such a broad range of people and interests in our communities that are not always represented by mainstream media outlets,” Mr Basso said.

“It will be a sad day if digital radio loses the diversity and unique services that community radio brings to the media landscape.”

Each week we’ll profile some of the singers, songwriters and worship leaders you hear across the day on Inspire Digital. This week on Inspire Music Moment we look at the prolific ministry of English worship leader and songwriter Matt Redman.

Matt’s began leading worship since his late teens as part of the Soul Survivor in the UK with pastor Mike Pilavachi and came to international attention when his song, The Heart of Worship began to be sung around the world. Some of his most popular early songs include “Heart Of Worship”, “Let Everything That Has Breath”, “Once Again”, “Undignified”, and “Better Is One Day”. More recently he has co-written songs like You Never Let Go, the 2005 Dove Award-winning “Blessed Be Your Name” (Worship Song of the Year) and the Grammy Award nominated “Our God”.

In 2008 Matt Redman and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia to plant a church alongside Louie Giglio and Chris Tomlin called Passion City Church. They have since returned to Brighton, England as part of St Peters, a new church planted out of Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) in London.

Matt Redman talks about his worship song 10,000 Reasons (Bless my Soul)
